Upcoming Meetings Our September 19 program explores an unexpected side of Darien founder General James Oglethorpe's history from Alan Roeske, Ft. King George Historic Site Interpretive Ranger. Alan will share his research and interpretation of General Oglethorpe's infamous family members in his presentation, "Treasonous Spies: The Hidden Oglethorpe Legacy." Upcoming Field trips CANCELLED -------  Saturday, September 28 @ 10:00am to 12:00noon Will be rescheduled You are invited to tour historic St. Marys  with Molly’s Old South Tours, and to see the John Houstoun McIntosh Sugarhouse, 6 miles North of town: “Learn of St. Marys’ big names and big events while gaining VIP access to its iconic landmarks!” You will drive to St. Marys, and meet up at the Osborne Street Waterfront Pavilion, at the corner of St. Marys & Osborne Streets, in downtown St. Marys. The Pavilion is located at:  7 St. Marys St. W. St. Marys, GA 31558  Cost for the tour: $25 per person Sign-up HERE Nov 8   Little St. Simons Is., Coastal Conservation Center (S. Coleman) • Little St. Simons Island tour: Scott Coleman, Center for Coastal Conservation A day tour of LSSI, departing from Hamilton Point on north SSI We have several exciting field trips in the planning stages. In early Fall we will visit Jekyll Island’s Mosaic Museum, along with a Trolley Tour of the Village and tour one of the Millionaire’s Cottages. We are also planning a Fall trip to the 250-year-old historic town of St. Marys, where we will embark on a tour of the town with special access to the town’s iconic landmarks, including the First Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest church buildings in Georgia. We will also visit the Submarine Base Museum, and the McIntosh Sugar Works, John Houstoun McIntosh’s tabby sugar mill built in the 1820’s.

About the Lower Altamaha Historical Society:         

The mission of the Lower Altamaha Historic Society is to preserve and disseminate the history of McIntosh County. One of the primary missions of the Lower Altamaha Historical Society from its inception was, and continues to be, the support of the Fort King George State Historic Site near Darien, scene of the earliest English fortification in Georgia. LAHS, utilizing grant funds provided by the City of Darien, has expedited the preparation and installation of several state historic markers in the community, the most recent being the marker to the Enslaved at Butler Island in 2019.
